The Best Travel Apps I Used Across Europe

If there’s one thing my Eurotrip taught me, it’s this: apps make or break your travel day. Google Maps may lead you down a scenic alley, but Spotify might decide your train-ride soundtrack, and ChatGPT might convince you to book a sunset spot you never planned for.

Since my blog is all about how tech shapes real travel, here are the apps I relied on every single day — and whether they actually worked beyond the glossy Play Store screenshots.

1. Google Maps – The Quiet MVP

Works best for: walking routes, metro navigation, estimating travel time in cities
What surprised me: Its offline maps saved me in Switzerland when my data simply vanished somewhere between Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken. Its predictive route timings were shockingly accurate, almost eerie.

2. ChatGPT – My Pocket Travel Advisor

Works best for: fast itinerary drafts, food ideas, neighbourhood filtering
Real-world performance: Great for suggestions, average for timings, terrible for knowing what’s closed on Mondays in Europe. But it helped me discover cafés and spots I’d never seen on Google.

3. Instagram Reels – The Expectation Setter

Works best for: inspiration
Real-world performance: Those empty Santorini alleys? Lies.
Still, Reels pushed me toward some viewpoints I wouldn’t have thought to search for.

4. Trip Planner – The All-In-One Journey Tool

This became my main app for:
– checking train/bus timings
– real-time delay updates
– planning multi-city routes
– comparing travel options

What made it actually useful
Trip Planner gave me faster and more accurate “time-to-arrive” predictions than Google Maps whenever I was switching between buses, trams, or trains in major cities.

It wasn’t perfect, but it helped me avoid two near-miss train connections in Amsterdam and Munich which was worth gold during a trip.

5. Bolt / Uber – For the “I Can’t Walk Anymore” Moments

Eastern Europe → Bolt was perfect.
Western Europe → Uber was more reliable.
These apps saved me during late-night travel when metros were closed.

6. Splitwise – The Friendship Saver

Essential if you’re traveling with friends. Keeps your entire trip’s expenses clean and drama-free.
